Why we work this way

Anyone can plant a garden. Keeping it alive is the job.

Worm compost, and one of the worms that made it.
You don’t really keep the fish, you keep the water.

Most gardens are sold as a picture. Plants arrive fresh from the nursery, everything is green on handover day, the photos are lovely. Then the rains come, the clay underneath holds the water, and the garden starts dying quietly from the roots up.

We come at it from the other end. Ask anyone who keeps an aquarium: you don’t really keep the fish, you keep the water. A garden is the same. We look after the habitat, which means the soil, the drainage, the light and the right mix around the roots. Then the plants look after themselves.

Read our philosophy

Hazman Safaraz, Founder of Tanaman

The man behind Tanaman.

Before a single plant goes in, we look at the tanah. We open it, feed it, and blend our own mixes for what will grow there. Then we design the garden so it is easy to look after, because handover day is the easy part. The real test is an ordinary morning five years on, when everything is still alive.

Everything started in Puchong, from Hazman. He designs each garden, decides where every plant goes and runs the crew on site. Many of his clients keep coming back.

Where you’ll find our work

On a roof in KL. And in a lobby.

A long metal raised planter of young plants on a rooftop

On the roofA rooftop food garden in KL.

Galvanised raised planters, edible plants. A rooftop is about the hardest place you can ask a plant to live. Full sun, steady wind, heat off the concrete, and a planting mix that must be light and quick to drain but still hold water through the afternoon. It is a soil problem before it is anything else.

Indoors is a hard habitat of a different kind: air-conditioning, low light and no rain. We supply plants, place them and look after them.

Plant rental

And closer to home.

We maintain condominium and commercial landscapes too. Everything started in Puchong, and we work there first, then in KL, PJ, Klang, Damansara, Subang and Nilai.

What we do

Eight ways we can help.

Whichever one you need, it starts the same way. We come and look at the place first.

Lawn and garden bed with stone edging

Consultation

We walk the site with you, look at the light, the drainage and the tanah, and tell you plainly what will thrive there and what won’t. The walk is free and takes about 30 to 60 minutes. You leave with a direction, a plant list and an idea of the upkeep.

Pebble and stepping-stone path in a courtyard

Landscape design & build

Lawns, paths, pebble courtyards, rock gardens, feature trees, lighting. Designed for the site and built from the groundwork up, with every plant given room for the size it will become.

Pruning a monstera during a maintenance visit

Garden maintenance

Pruning, feeding, lawn and soil care. Monthly and on request, for homes, offices and community spaces, by people who notice when something has changed.

A tropical planter bed beside a path

Condominium & commercial maintenance

Common-area landscapes looked after on a schedule your management office can rely on. We also suggest the small changes that make the grounds cheaper to keep, year on year.

Planters on top of office cabinets

Plant rental

Healthy plants for offices, lobbies, shops and events, delivered and set up. We come back to care for them, so you get the green without the watering rota.

Galvanised raised beds planted with herbs

Edible gardens

Herbs, vegetables and fruit for homes, schools, communities and rooftops. We set up the beds, get the soil rich, and teach you to keep it producing. Workshops too, worms included.

Rooftop gardens

Full sun, steady wind and a slab that counts every kilo. We build rooftop gardens around a light, quick-draining mix and plants that can take it, then stay to look after them.

Large fiddle-leaf figs in planters

Potted plants & indoor set-up

The right plant for the light you really have, in a mix that suits life in air-con, in a planter that suits the room. From one statement fig to a whole office floor.
