A kitchen garden in the Klang Valley

A bare yard of compacted orange soil beside a white building, enclosed by an expanded-metal mesh fence and a white wall, is turned into a kitchen garden. The photos follow the job from workers clearing and levelling the ground, to galvanised corrugated-steel raised beds filled with a dark, bark-rich organic mix, to a later visit with the beds full and woodchip mulch laid between them next to red interlocking pavers. The beds hold culinary herbs and vegetables: basil, mint, okra, and what appear to be turmeric, pandan, laksa leaf (Vietnamese coriander), ulam raja and lemongrass. A passion fruit vine carrying fruit is trained on stakes against the mesh fence. A separate ornamental bed around a palm trunk is planted with gingers, pink ground orchids and yellow-orange lantana, finished with dark mulch.

Every photograph on this page is our own, taken on site. We have described only what they show.

The photographs

From the site.

Galvanised steel raised beds overflowing with basil and herbs, woodchip mulch between them and a mesh fence behind. Front-on view of the kitchen garden: four steel raised beds of herbs and okra along a mesh fence, red pavers in front. Looking across five steel raised beds planted with mint, turmeric, okra and herbs, with woodchip mulch between. Close view of a raised bed of mixed culinary herbs, with a second bed of mint and turmeric behind. Newly planted ornamental bed around a palm trunk: gingers, pink ground orchids and lantana in dark mulch. A green passion fruit hanging from a vine trained on stakes against the mesh fence. Five empty steel raised beds freshly filled with dark organic mix on bare ground, before planting. Top-down close-up of the dark, bark-rich organic mix inside a steel raised bed. Two workers, seen from behind, clearing and levelling bare orange soil beside the mesh fence at the start of the job.
